Putting Magic back in Business?
[Edward Tsang, Senior Strategist, Utility Computing 2003/7/8]

As any muggle north of Hobbiton knows, "magic" is a hot property at the moment. Barnes and Noble sold over 1 million copies of the latest Harry Potter book in 48 hours, smashing all previous publishing records and firmly establishing the small boy from Privet Drive as more popular than Gandalf right now. As one executive from the New York bookstore commented, "Lord of the Rings is just so last year's magic."

Business executives take note. At least it is not only the IT vendors brand of magic that proves fickle and transitory.

Whilst HP and IBM vie over "who thought of it first," the rest of the IT suppliers have all rushed to attach their particular moniker to the utility computing strategy. Agility, Adaptive, Autonomic, Grid, Organic, Ubiquitous, Identity, Service - all words that providers are eagerly prefacing "computing" with to ensure their own strategy "stands out."

Amidst all of this barrage of marketing and jostling for key-word definition, a few vital messages are being lost to the user: does utility computing offer greater profits? Is it an opportunity for business transformation that extends beyond the efficient re-provisioning of bytes? Will it drive forward an entirely new business landscape - replete with hidden prospects for all our companies?

Such questions are at the heart of UtilCompWorld, the newly launched global series of Utility Computing business conferences taking place in New York, London and San Francisco next year.

These events, catering for senior level business executives only, will probe the business case for utility computing in-depth and explore the experience of the early adopters. Understanding what genuine business ROI companies have achieved by adopting the on demand model is the key question that underpins the events.

Many vendors have leapt on the utility computing band-wagon of late - and all are making bold claims for the "magic" it can work. Join us at the conference to discover if the enchantment proves as enduring as Harry Potter.
