SCO to extend SCOx initiative through alliance with Ericom Software
[UC Newsdesk 2003/8/18]

The SCO Group announced a strategic alliance with Ericom Software, a provider of Web, wireless and e-Business solutions. The resulting solution from this alliance aims to enable users to securely unlock mission-critical legacy system information in a low-cost, low-risk Web Services environment, whilst keeping all functionality in the process.

The Company has recently been shadowed by a number of legal disputes with IBM and Red Hat Inc. over intellectual property rights. Its recent move to device licensing options for Linux users has been seen by some as attempt to secure a new revenue stream and brought questions to its overall products strategy.

SCO made several announcements on its web services initiative on the same day and reaffirmed the company's continuing commitment to its customers -- providing SCOx solutions that cost-effectively improve the integration of operating system services, extend the life of legacy/character-based applications and enable users to easily embrace Web Services solutions and tools.

The SCOx initiative provides the technology and programs to assist companies in growing their business, connecting to users and integrating with suppliers using specialized Web Services. Ericom PowerTerm Host Publisher and other SCOx technologies represent important elements of realizing that vision by providing powerful building blocks of the SCOx Application Substrate.

"A few years ago an IT system was an independent island that ran a business via a few simple dumb terminals," said Eric Fernwood, VP of Sales and Marketing at Ericom Software. "Now, connectivity is everything. People, computers, and devices must interact with corporate information on a real-time basis. That means that applications written years ago have to become Web, wireless, XML, device and service-enabled practically overnight. This is why SCOx is so important. It enables customers to take the applications they wrote ten years ago and Web, wireless, XML, and device-enable them in weeks, not years. SCOx and Ericom's PowerTerm Host Publisher makes this level of connectivity a reality."

"We, at SCO, recognize that the information and business logic contained in legacy applications is critical to the success of a company," explained Jeff Hunsaker, Senior VP of Marketing, The SCO Group. "Unfortunately, legacy information is extremely difficult to access and maintain. The value of this strategic alliance with Ericom is that it unlocks this critical resource and delivers it in a next generation Web solution."
