SchlumbergerSema teams with Sun Microsystems [UC Newsdesk 2003/10/1]
SchlumbergerSema, the IT business segment of Schlumberger Limited, and Sun Microsystems, Inc. have announced an agreement to bring utility computing solutions to users in the energy, finance, telecommunications and public sectors around the world. The agreement enables SchlumbergerSema, a member of the Sun iForce community, to deploy Sun's utility computing architecture so that users in these sectors can dynamically match IT sourcing to business needs. These users can have a globally available, secure outsourced business solution that includes consulting and managed services as an option with SchlumbergerSema. "With SchlumbergerSema and Sun, customers have the ability to scale up and scale down on processing capacity, as well as pay only for the increments utilized, enabling companies to predict and control costs of securely shared IT resources," said Hossein Sazegar, vice president,Computing Infrastructure Outsourcing, SchlumbergerSema. "Our experience at providing variable-cost and variable-capacity solutions has shown that such models can address business objectives to generate immediate cost-efficiencies and improve return on investment." Sun's utility computing infrastructures and pricing model, combined with SchlumbergerSema expertise in providing IT business solutions, can deliver customized, pay-for-use network computing options that help each user meet its market-specific business priorities. "Sun is working with SchlumbergerSema because they are a leading technology service provider with a long history of helping customers control IT costs and complexities," said Patricia C. Sueltz, executive vice president, Sun Services. "This agreement is another demonstration that Sun's utility computing initiative is gaining solid traction and momentum in the partner community." Users will be able to pay for the computing resources they use through Sun's resource metering capabilities. Furthermore, the complete solution from SchlumbergerSema will include: 1) Federated security from the Java Card identity badge through network identity servers managing identities and controlling access to the networks, applications and facilities; 2) Full, cost-effective worldwide support services from the hosted operation to the desktop.
