Putting Magic back in Business?
As any muggle north of Hobbiton knows, "magic" is a hot property right now. Barnes and Noble sold over 1 million copies of the latest Harry Potter book in 48 hours, smashing all previous publishing records and firmly establishing the small boy from Privet Drive as more popular than Gandalf right now. As one executive from the New York bookstore commented, "Lord of the Rings is just so last year's magic."

Business executives take note. At least it is not only the IT vendors brand of magic that proves fickle and transitory.

As utility computing gathers momentum, with a reported 42% of major corporations considering a utility computing strategy, one nagging concern that users continue to highlight is that of security. Increased integration of company data with the pooled resources of others inevitably raises concern that security is unavoidably decreased.

HP has announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the SelectAccess software assets of Baltimore Technologies, a UK-based provider of high-trust security products. Following completion of the acquisition, the identity management technologies in SelectAccess will become part of HP's Adaptive Management software portfolio, aiming to provide more secure user access to network services and enterprise resources.

Microsoft claims security boost by coalition of industry support for Identity Integration Server
Microsoft has announced support from leading industry systems integrators (SIs), independent hardware vendors (IHVs) and independent software vendors (ISVs) for its Microsoft Identity Integration Server 2003 (MIIS) and other identity management offerings. The company sees this as a strong element in their bid to help customers reduce cost, risk and complexity associated with managing end-user identities.
