What can we learn from the recent blackout in America?

The recent electricity outage in Northeast America was devastating for many. In New York City alone, officials claim the 29-hour blackout cost at least $1.05 billion or $36 million per hour. Is there something we can learn for utility computing as it is often compared to electricity as a role model?

Some blame it on privatization and deregulation, which allowed the whole electricity distribution system to get so fragmented and complex to manage. Others blame it on the lack of investment, an oversight... Click here for Full Article

The SCO Group announced a strategic alliance with Ericom Software, a provider of Web, wireless and e-Business solutions. The resulting solution from this alliance aims to enable users to securely unlock mission-critical legacy system information in a low-cost, low-risk Web Services environment, whilst keeping all functionality in the process.

HP to Acquire Extreme Logic Inc. to boost Adaptive Enterprise strategy
HP is to acquire e-Business solution provider Extreme Logic Inc. It adds to the recent acquisitions by HP and aims to further HP's Adaptive Enterprise strategy. Subject to the terms of the agreement, Extreme Logic will be merged into a wholly-owned subsidiary of HP and will operate as part of the HP Services organization.

IBM announced it has been selected by the LEGO Company to help it use technology to more efficiently meet seasonal peaks in demand for its products. As part of the multi-year agreement, LEGO aims to lower costs and gain efficiencies by consolidating its existing global informational technology (IT) platform.

Equifax and IBM sign 10-year on demand technology services agreement
Equifax Inc., a provider of critical information to businesses, consumers and the public sector, today jointly announced with IBM a 10-year agreement under which IBM will provide global on demand technology services for Equifax's operations in the United States, Canada, and Europe. This is an extension to their existing relationship, providing $400 million in additional estimated revenue to IBM for a total contract value of $800 million.
