Dear Reader,

The recent OracleWorld conference has heralded numerous grid computing announcements. What used to be somewhat sniffily viewed as the technical, nuts-and-bolts end of utility computing, has moved firmly front and centre.

For anyone confused about the difference between utility computing and grid computing, grid computing can be broadly defined as a new and emerging IT architecture by which computing resources are shared. Oracle, of course, are focusing on software as a means to do this and 10g may well represent the most sophisticated attempt yet in the commercial arena.

Utility computing in contrast is a more over-arching term, the vision is for a ubiquitous IT infrastructure which meets our computing needs in a utility-like fashion. Paying only for what we have consumed, we will receive a monthly "computing bill" along with our electricity one.

It is gratifying to see utility computing beginning to take very real shape with an ever-widening base. In this week's newsletter, Veritas' VP of Integrated Platforms describes utility computing as "just-in-time manufacturing" for IT resources. As an idea which underpinned a decade of supply chain revolution, we think the analogy is an accurate one.

Utility Computing: Legal challenges and how to handle them.
In our last installment (A cultural sea change with eyes wide open - 2003/09/05) we dissected some of the key commercial and legal issues to be borne in mind when committing any utility computing project to its contractual form. Here we highlight the new potential for problems in utility computing and ask what happens when the "utility" fails to perform. How can the parties establish incentives for successful performance? How can they avoid company-crippling catastrophes otherwise avoided with more stable IT outsourcing arrangements? And what new pitfalls does the path to utility computing conceal?
