Dear Reader,
At the recent salesforce.com
London CRM roadshow, European General Manager, Steve Garrett told an amusing anecdote. Back when Einstein had accepted a post at Princeton University in the US, a college administrator is alleged to have rushed into his room in a panic.
"Professor Einstein - there's been a disaster! All of the questions on the exam papers that have just been handed out to the students are exactly identical to the questions that we put on last year's exam papers!
Einstein reputedly did not bat an eyelid at this mix-up. "That's not a problem at all," he said. "All of the answers are different this year."
In many respects the same can be said of IT business strategies today. Not so long ago, the ASP model was greeted rapturously - before being exposed as
a flawed approach.
However, the business benefits which lead venture capital to (briefly) worship at the feet of ASPs remain just as compelling. As Paul Campaniello of Savantis points out in
this week's interview, executives are facing tremendous pressure to achieve business flexibility and reduced operational costs. Greater focus upon core-competencies is just one other thing for the wish-list.
As both Gartner and Forrester have release studies that predict a massive
increase in the use of web services
the foundation for utility computing continues to spread throughout the enterprise landscape.
The questions may remain the same but our answers are certainly improving.

Two of the leading analyst firms that track IT trends -- Gartner Group and Forrester -- are predicting a massive uptick in the use of Web services, which greatly simplify the process of machine-to-machine communication between otherwise incompatible applications.

Virtualising the parts other companies cannot reach
Virtualisation is a word that we are all going to hear much more often as the utility computing model begins to take shape. In an interview with UtilityComputing.com, Savantis’ Director of Marketing, Paul Campaniello, argues that the time is ripe for the database layer to be brought into line with everything else and be available as a virtualised layer. More than one analyst backs up his assertion.
